US intensifies criticism of International Criminal Court

By TrendingWire Newsroom

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stepped up his attacks on the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. His tough stance could have significant effects on the tribunal, which handles cases of war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. Rubio has long been a critic of the ICC, arguing that it unfairly targets the United States and its allies. The latest remarks suggest the US may take further action against the court, such as imposing sanctions or restricting visas for ICC officials. This is not the first time Washington has clashed with the ICC. In 2020, former President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on ICC prosecutors investigating US troops in Afghanistan. President Joe Biden lifted those sanctions but maintained a critical stance. The ICC was established in 2002 to prosecute individuals for the most serious international crimes. While 123 countries are members, major powers like the US, China, and Russia have not joined. Critics say the court has been inefficient and politically biased. Supporters argue it is essential for global justice. The Biden administration has not yet announced any specific measures, but Rubio’s aggressive rhetoric signals a possible shift. Experts warn that targeting the ICC could undermine international law and weaken efforts to hold perpetrators accountable. The court is currently investigating Russia’s actions in Ukraine, as well as alleged war crimes in Gaza and Sudan. It remains unclear how the US will proceed, but the growing tension between Washington and The Hague is likely to continue.
