FIFA has scrapped a controversial plan that would have allowed billions of dollars in private commercial investment in the World Cup, following fierce backlash from member nations and the wider football community.
The plan, put forward by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, drew strong opposition and has now been shelved. It was intended to bring in private investment, but the backlash led to its withdrawal.
US President Donald Trump said Friday he has not spoken to Infantino about the plan. Trump made the remark in response to a journalist's question during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David and did not elaborate.
FIFA's chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, said staff were deceived over Infantino's plan.
