US Becomes India's Top LPG Supplier With 67% of Imports, Says Minister

The United States now supplies about 67% of India's liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports, making it the largest supplier, according to Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The shift follows the Hormuz crisis that disrupted Gulf supplies.

Before the conflict broke out in West Asia, India imported roughly 60% of its LPG requirement, and 90% of those imports transited through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The turmoil prompted India to reduce its dependence on Gulf suppliers, and imports from the U.S. have filled the gap.

To further offset lower shipments from the Gulf, India has also increased its domestic LPG production, Puri said. He noted that India is now the world's third-largest energy consumer and importer, and the fourth-largest refiner.
