Authorities in central China have uncovered a case where a drink-driving suspect faked his own death to evade legal consequences. The suspect, identified only by his surname Si, was arrested for drink-driving in January last year in Anyang, Henan province. Police later found that he had previously been penalized twice for driving without a license while intoxicated. He was released on bail pending further investigation.
According to local prosecutors, Si and his family staged an elaborate ruse involving a coffin and a fake burial to convince authorities that he had died. After the alleged death, Si fled to southern China. The scheme was eventually discovered, and prosecutors recently disclosed the case to mainland media, sparking widespread online discussion.
The authorities have not released details on how the deception was uncovered or whether Si has been rearrested. The case highlights the lengths some individuals go to in order to avoid drunk-driving penalties in China, where laws have become increasingly strict in recent years.
