Scientists may have found some of the universe’s missing ordinary matter. The total amount of ordinary matter—the stuff that makes up stars, planets, and everything we see—is only about one-tenth of what scientists expected based on early universe models. This discrepancy has long puzzled astronomers. New research suggests that a significant portion of this missing matter was violently ejected from galaxies and now lies in the vast space between them. The findings indicate that powerful outflows from galaxies can hurl matter far into intergalactic space, where it becomes difficult to detect. This discovery helps explain where a large chunk of the universe's ordinary matter has been hiding. While dark matter and dark energy remain separate mysteries, this study focuses on the ordinary baryonic matter that should be present. The researchers hope that further observations will confirm the location and amount of this missing matter, bringing us closer to a complete understanding of the universe's composition.
