Gaza family faces agonizing wait to recover son's body from restricted zone

A Palestinian family spent nine days trying to retrieve the body of a loved one killed near a military zone in Gaza. Muhammed Abu Khammash, a 29-year-old father of three with severe mental illness, disappeared from his family's displacement tent. He was later found to have wandered into an area known as the 'Yellow Line,' where Israeli forces remain deployed. Relatives say he was killed by an Israeli shell. Since a ceasefire in October, the Yellow Line cuts across more than 60 percent of Gaza, restricting access. Families of those killed near the line often struggle to recover bodies. Muhammed's father, Oda, searched for days but was told the area was off-limits. His mother, holding a white flag, attempted to reach her son but was warned by Israeli forces that they would open fire. She returned empty-handed. After coordination with Israeli-backed local militias, the body was finally recovered. The family buried him in a grave they had dug in anticipation. 'The ordeal of recovering him was even harder than losing him,' Oda said. The family had already lost two other sons in the conflict. The true number of unrecovered bodies near the Yellow Line remains unknown.
