Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced plans to restore and reopen the historic Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, a Los Angeles landmark that has been closed since 2020. The company will also reopen the adjacent former ArcLight cinema, a 14-screen multiplex, under its subsidiary Alamo Drafthouse. Both theaters are expected to begin operations in early 2028 after extensive renovations.
The Cinerama Dome, known for its distinctive geodesic dome design, will be restored as a single-screen venue. The adjoining property, which previously housed the ArcLight Hollywood, will be rebranded as an Alamo Drafthouse, featuring dine-in service with food and drinks brought to seats. Sony acquired the Alamo Drafthouse chain in 2024, marking its entry into theater operations.
The decision revives two prominent venues that went dark during the pandemic. Sony has not disclosed specific renovation details or costs but confirmed the restoration plan. The new Alamo Drafthouse will include the original 14 auditoriums, while the Dome will retain its iconic architecture.
The move is seen as a boost for Hollywood's theater district, which has struggled to recover foot traffic. The Dome originally opened in 1963 and was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
