A stage adaptation of Prince's iconic 1984 film and album "Purple Rain" is set to debut on Broadway in spring 2027. The musical will play at the Majestic Theatre in New York, with previews beginning on March 12, 2027, and an official opening night on April 12, 2027.
Producer Orin Wolf announced the news, which coincides with the 42nd anniversary of the film's release. The production has undergone creative changes, now featuring director Saheem Ali and book writer Peter Duchan. The creative team aims to honor Prince's legacy, and the musical director expressed hope that Prince would have approved of the show.
"Purple Rain," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score, follows the story of a young musician named The Kid. The musical will include songs from the original album, such as the title track, "When Doves Cry," and "Let's Go Crazy." Casting has not yet been announced. The show is expected to attract Prince fans and theatergoers alike, bringing the iconic music to the Broadway stage.
