Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, has blamed the United States for recent tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Kazakhstan, Araghchi said the insecurity in the region is "exclusively caused by the US breach of the agreement," according to Iran's state news agency IRNA.
Araghchi condemned what he called "brutal attacks" on Iran's vital infrastructure and accused the US of committing "war crimes." He said the recent escalation in the Strait of Hormuz stems from Washington's failure to follow the terms of the Islamabad Agreement, specifically Article 5, which outlines Iran's commitments.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, through which a significant portion of the world's oil passes. Tensions in the area have frequently risen due to disputes over shipping and regional security.
Araghchi did not provide further details on the alleged US breaches. The US has not yet responded to the accusations. The meeting in Kazakhstan highlights ongoing diplomatic efforts by Iran to gather support from allies like China.
