CPI(M) leader slams government over activist's removal from protest site
By TrendingWire Newsroom
M.A. Baby, the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has criticized the central government for removing activist Sonam Wangchuk from a protest site in New Delhi. Baby described the action as an example of an 'authoritarian attitude' and said that 'silencing dissent cannot be a substitute for accountability.'
Wangchuk, a well-known climate activist from Ladakh, has been leading protests demanding statehood for the region and environmental protections. The protest was taking place at Jantar Mantar, a common site for demonstrations in the capital. Authorities removed him from the area earlier this week, citing legal violations.
Baby's remarks come amid growing tensions between the government and various activist groups. He accused the Modi administration of trying to suppress peaceful dissent rather than addressing the protesters' demands. The CPI(M) leader stressed that democratic rights, including the right to protest, must be upheld.
Sonam Wangchuk is known for his innovative approach to education and environmental issues. He gained national attention for his efforts in Ladakh and has been a vocal advocate for sustainable development. The removal from the protest site has sparked criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups, who argue that it infringes on the freedom of expression.
The government has not yet responded to the specific allegations of authoritarianism. However, officials have maintained that all actions are taken in accordance with the law.
