Chennamma, the wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, passed away on Monday at a hospital in Bengaluru. She was 84. She had been admitted to Manipal Hospital earlier with breathing difficulties, chest congestion, and other age-related health issues, according to family sources. Chennamma was known to be a supportive figure throughout Deve Gowda's political career, which included serving as Prime Minister of India from 1996 to 1997. The couple had six children, including H.D. Kumaraswamy, a former Chief Minister of Karnataka. Family members and political leaders expressed their condolences. Deve Gowda, now 91, was by her side at the hospital. The funeral is expected to take place in their hometown of Hassan district. The death marks a personal loss for the former PM and his extended family, who have been prominent in Karnataka politics for decades.
