French Parliament Approves Law on Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill
By TrendingWire Newsroom
French lawmakers voted on Wednesday to approve a bill that legalizes assisted dying for adults suffering from incurable illnesses. The legislation, backed by President Emmanuel Macron, had sparked intense debate in the country but ultimately passed with a majority. Opinion surveys indicate that a large portion of the French public supports the measure, which is seen as a way to give terminally ill patients more control over their end-of-life choices.
The new law sets strict conditions: only adults with a serious and incurable disease causing unbearable physical or psychological suffering can request assistance in dying. Patients must be capable of making a free and informed decision, and the process involves multiple medical reviews to ensure compliance. The law distinguishes assisted dying from euthanasia, where a doctor administers a lethal substance. Under this law, a doctor prescribes a lethal medication that the patient self-administers.
France now joins a handful of European countries that have legalized some form of assisted dying, including Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The issue has long been controversial, with opponents arguing it could lead to abuse or pressure on vulnerable individuals. Supporters, however, maintain that it provides dignity and choice for those suffering greatly.
The bill's approval marks a significant shift in French law, which previously only allowed sedation for terminally ill patients. The government expects the law to take effect within a year, allowing time for implementation guidelines to be developed.
