Sonam Wangchuk, the well-known education reformer from Ladakh, is leading a 21-day fast in New Delhi. He has become the main face of a protest organized by the Climate Justice Platform (CJP). The protesters are demanding the resignation of India’s Union Education Minister. Wangchuk is widely respected for his work in improving education in remote areas of Ladakh. He founded the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) and was an inspiration for a popular film character. The current protest is part of a larger campaign to highlight issues in the education system. The fast began several days ago, and Wangchuk has remained composed despite the physical strain. Supporters have gathered at the protest site to show solidarity. The group says they will continue until their demand is met. This is not the first time Wangchuk has used peaceful protest to push for change. He has previously been involved in environmental and social causes in Ladakh. The education minister has not yet responded to the demand for resignation.
