The Supreme Court on Tuesday accepted the CBI's closure report giving a clean chit to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a coal block allocation case. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana closed the case, which had alleged irregularities in the allocation of a coal block during Singh's tenure as coal minister. The CBI had earlier filed a closure report, stating there was no evidence of criminality. Separately, the court dismissed the Odisha government's plea challenging the release of the film 'Mahaprabhu Jagannath'. The state had sought to block the animation film, arguing it depicted Lord Jagannath in a manner that hurt religious sentiments. The bench, however, observed that creativity should not be hindered and that animation is meant for children and education. 'There is creativity in the country. Animation is for the purpose of children. Nobody is now reading books. These things should not come in the way of art,' the court remarked. The film's release had been opposed by some religious groups, but the court declined to intervene, stating it cannot sit in judgment over art. Both rulings were delivered by the same bench in New Delhi.
