China Urges UK to Resolve British Steel Nationalisation Fairly

By TrendingWire Newsroom

China has formally warned the United Kingdom over its decision to fully nationalise British Steel, demanding a fair and just resolution. The Chinese government expressed concern that the move, which involves the nationalisation of a company owned by Chinese firm Jingye, could harm bilateral economic relations. Jingye, a Chinese steelmaker, acquired British Steel in 2020 after the company faced financial difficulties. However, the UK government recently decided to take full control of the loss-making steel producer, citing national security risks. China argues that the nationalisation was unjustified and has called for appropriate compensation for Jingye. The warning from Beijing comes as tensions between China and Western countries over trade and investment continue. The UK has defended its decision, stating that protecting critical industries is necessary. British Steel employs thousands of workers in the UK, and its future has been uncertain for years. China’s foreign ministry stated that it expects the UK to handle the matter in accordance with international law and market principles. It also warned that failure to resolve the issue fairly could affect future Chinese investment in the UK. The case highlights growing scrutiny of foreign ownership in strategic sectors. Both sides have expressed willingness to engage in dialogue to find a solution. The outcome could set a precedent for similar disputes involving other countries.
