Parasite Outbreak Mimics Stomach Bug, Doctors Warn
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Health officials are alerting the public that a parasite called cyclospora is causing symptoms that many mistake for a common stomach virus. Since May, over 1,600 confirmed cases have been reported, with more than 5,100 others under investigation. The outbreak has hit Midwestern states particularly hard.
Cyclospora is a tiny parasite that infects the small intestine. It spreads when people consume food or water contaminated with the microscopic organism. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. These can appear a week or more after exposure, making it hard to connect the illness to a specific meal.
Unlike a typical stomach bug that clears up in a few days, cyclospora infection can last for weeks if untreated. Doctors say the illness often goes undiagnosed because its symptoms are similar to other gastrointestinal issues. A stool test is needed to confirm the presence of the parasite.
The source of the current outbreak is still under investigation. Past outbreaks have been linked to imported fresh produce, such as cilantro and raspberries. Health officials advise washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, but note that cyclospora can be hard to remove.
Anyone with persistent diarrhea should see a doctor and mention the possibility of cyclospora. Treatment involves a specific antibiotic that can shorten the illness and relieve symptoms.
As the investigation continues, officials urge people to practice good food safety and be aware that not every 'stomach bug' is viral.
