A new study from the University of Michigan used artificial intelligence to uncover a pattern in the evolution of a large group of birds called Passeriformes, which includes more than half of all bird species. The AI tool analyzed the evolutionary history of these birds and found that they underwent rapid bursts of evolution. These bursts often happened at the same time as major climate shifts throughout Earth’s history. Passeriformes, also known as perching birds or songbirds, are the most diverse group of birds. The researchers trained an AI model on genetic and fossil data to map out when different species emerged. They discovered that evolution did not happen steadily but in short, intense periods. Many of these periods matched times when the climate changed significantly, such as during warming or cooling events. The findings suggest that climate shifts may have created new opportunities for birds to adapt and thrive, leading to the rapid development of new species. This helps scientists understand how environmental changes drive biodiversity. The study, however, does not claim that climate is the only factor; other elements like geography and competition also play roles. The research was led by biologists and computer scientists at the University of Michigan. It shows how AI can help reveal patterns in evolution that were previously hard to detect.
