New Method Predicts Sun's Next Activity Cycle Years in Advance

Scientists have found a way to predict the strength of the sun's next activity cycle up to seven years before it reaches its peak. The sun follows an roughly 11-year cycle, swinging between periods of high activity (solar maximum) and low activity (solar minimum). During solar maximum, the sun produces more sunspots, flares, and eruptions that can affect Earth's technology—disrupting satellites, power grids, and communications. The new method uses observations taken during the sun's quiet phase, or 'sleep,' to forecast how active it will become later. By analyzing changes in the sun's magnetic field and its 'coronal emission'—the faint glow of the outermost atmosphere—scientists can gauge how much energy is being stored for the next cycle. This prediction technique could give operators of satellites, power grids, and airlines more time to prepare for potentially disruptive space weather. The study was conducted by a team of solar physicists and published recently. While previous forecasts relied on early signs of solar activity, this approach works even when the sun is at its calmest. The researchers hope that improved predictions will help protect infrastructure and deepen our understanding of the sun's inner workings.
