Hong Kong Lawmakers Begin Unprecedented Study Trip to Beijing

By TrendingWire Newsroom

All 90 members of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council (Legco) have started a week-long study visit to Beijing, the first time the entire legislature has traveled to the capital together. Legco President Starry Lee said the trip is a valuable chance for lawmakers to gain firsthand understanding of national affairs, which will help them better align Hong Kong’s policies with China’s development goals. The visit includes briefings from central government officials and tours of key institutions. Observers say this reflects Beijing’s growing emphasis on integrating Hong Kong’s governance with mainland priorities. Since the 2019 protests and subsequent national security law, Hong Kong’s political system has become more aligned with China’s leadership. This trip is seen as part of that broader effort to strengthen ties. Lawmakers are expected to discuss topics like the Greater Bay Area initiative and Hong Kong’s role in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan. The delegation returns next weekend.
