Ukraine Accuses Russia of Deadly Strike on Grain Ship

By TrendingWire Newsroom

Ukraine has accused Russia of launching a missile attack on a Turkish-owned cargo ship carrying grain, killing six crew members. The incident occurred on Sunday, just hours after Moscow fired a fresh barrage of missiles at Kyiv, Ukraine's capital. According to Ukraine's navy, Russia fired three cruise missiles at the Golden Leo, a vessel registered under the flag of Guinea-Bissau. The ship was leaving a combat zone with a cargo of grain when it was struck. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated that the crew included citizens of Syria and India. The prime minister of the region, Sergiy Koretsky, also confirmed details about the vessel. This attack highlights ongoing dangers in the Black Sea region, where grain exports are critical for global food supplies. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, shipping routes have been disrupted, and both sides have targeted infrastructure and vessels. Turkey, a NATO member, has brokered deals to facilitate grain shipments but tensions remain high. Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of targeting civilian ships and ports. Russia has not commented on the specific incident but has denied targeting civilian vessels in the past. An investigation into the attack is underway. The strike adds to the toll of the war, which has caused thousands of civilian deaths and displaced millions. International calls for de-escalation continue, but fighting shows no signs of abating.
