PLATO Mission Will Study Venus-Like Planets to Understand Habitability

The search for planets beyond our solar system often focuses on finding an Earth twin. But scientists say there is more to exoplanet research than just hunting for potentially habitable worlds. Understanding the full range of planets is essential to grasp how planetary systems evolve.
A key part of this effort will be the PLATO space mission, led by the European Space Agency. PLATO stands for PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars. It is designed to find and study planets orbiting Sun-like stars. Among its targets are planets in the 'Venus zone' – orbits where conditions might be similar to Venus in our own solar system.
Studying Venus-like planets is important because Venus and Earth started with similar conditions but ended up very different. Venus became a hot, hostile world with a thick atmosphere. Understanding why this happened can teach us what makes a planet truly habitable. By observing many such planets, PLATO will help scientists see patterns in how planets develop.
The mission will also measure the ages and masses of host stars precisely. This data will allow researchers to compare planets of different ages and see how they change over time. The goal is not just to find another Earth, but to understand the full story of planetary evolution – including why some worlds become habitable while others do not.
PLATO is expected to launch later this decade. It will survey hundreds of thousands of stars, looking for tiny dips in brightness caused by passing planets. With this information, scientists hope to answer fundamental questions about our place in the universe.
