Prehistoric Marine Predator Liopleuroodon Was Smaller Than Thought, Study Shows

A new study has revised the size of the ancient marine reptile Liopleurodon, showing it was not as massive as previously believed. For decades, the creature was famously depicted in a popular documentary as a 25-meter (82-foot) long hunting machine. However, scientists now estimate that Liopleurodon likely grew to only about five to seven meters in length, roughly the size of a modern orca. Liopleurodon was a type of pliosaur, a group of short-necked plesiosaurs that lived during the Jurassic period, around 160 million years ago. It was one of the top predators in the ancient seas. The earlier, larger estimates were based on fragmentary fossils and may have been exaggerated. The new study uses more complete remains and better comparative analysis to arrive at a more accurate size. Despite being smaller, researchers emphasize that Liopleurodon was still a formidable hunter. With its powerful jaws and large flippers, it would have been an efficient predator of fish, squid, and other marine reptiles. The study does not diminish its role as a key species in Jurassic ecosystems. The researchers hope their findings will help improve understanding of how these animals lived and evolved. This revision is part of a broader trend in paleontology, where new fossil discoveries and analytical techniques often lead to updated size estimates for extinct creatures.
