US Envoy Warns Canada Over Wildfire Smoke, Tariffs Possible
By TrendingWire Newsroom
The United States' ambassador to Canada, David Hoekstra, has stated that President Donald Trump is serious about imposing tariffs in response to the smoke from Canadian wildfires drifting into American territory. Hoekstra said frustration in the US is growing as the smoke continues to affect air quality and public health across northern states. The remarks came amid a severe wildfire season in Canada, with large blazes in British Columbia and Alberta producing plumes of smoke that have crossed the border repeatedly. While tariffs on Canadian goods have been threatened in the past over other issues, this is the first time they have been directly linked to environmental impacts from wildfires. Hoekstra emphasized that the US expects Canada to take stronger action to manage its forests and prevent such widespread fires. He did not specify what products might face tariffs or when they might be imposed. Canada has not officially responded to the threat, but officials have pointed to ongoing investments in firefighting resources and forest management. The issue adds tension to cross-border relations, which have already been strained over trade and energy policies. Wildfires in Canada have become more frequent and intense in recent years, partly due to climate change, causing significant economic and environmental damage.
