The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac), a major pro-Israel lobbying group, has stopped accepting campaign contributions for 15 House Democrats it had previously endorsed. This move comes after these lawmakers voted for an amendment to cut off all U.S. military aid to Israel. The amendment was introduced by Republican Representative Thomas Massie. It was part of a spending bill for the State Department. The measure failed with 314 votes against and 104 in favor. Nearly half of House Democrats supported it, while Massie was the only Republican. By Friday, donations to the campaigns of the 15 affected lawmakers were no longer available on Aipac's website, according to the New York Times. Among them was House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark. Before the vote, she said the U.S. should not give a blank check for military aid to any country that does not follow U.S. law and values. An Aipac spokesperson said the group's members are deeply appreciative of representatives who stand on principle and disappointed by those who do not. The amendment would have blocked $3.3 billion in annual security assistance to Israel, which is a longtime U.S. ally. The lobbying group's decision highlights the political consequences of opposing aid to Israel.
