A new scientific analysis reports that extreme heat driven by climate change is worsening drought conditions across Europe. The study shows that record-breaking heatwaves are making the atmosphere thirstier, causing faster evaporation of water from rivers, lakes, soils, and plants. This process is severely affecting water supplies, food production, and power generation.
According to the analysis, these intense heatwaves have become much more likely due to global warming. In western Europe, they are now 80 times more probable than they would be without climate change. In eastern Europe, they are 40 times more likely. The study also found that soil dryness in western Europe is five times more likely because of fossil fuel pollution, while in eastern Europe it is 11 times more likely.
The findings highlight how rising temperatures are intensifying natural dry spells, making them more extreme and damaging. Scientists say that as the planet continues to warm, Europe can expect more frequent and severe droughts unless emissions are reduced. The report underscores the link between human-caused climate change and the growing risk of water shortages and crop failures across the continent.
