Hong Kong-based mediation body reports new dispute resolution

By TrendingWire Newsroom

An intergovernmental mediation organization based in Hong Kong has added at least one more successful case to its record, according to its top official. Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah, secretary general of the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed), announced Sunday that the body has resolved a new dispute, bringing its total number of settled cases to at least two. The previous case involved parties from Singapore and mainland China. The IOMed, which started operations in early 2023, focuses on resolving commercial disputes between countries and companies through mediation rather than litigation. Its reach has grown to include 46 signatory states and 16 contracting states. Cheng noted that the organization has had to persistently explain its work to some parties who hold "a certain attitude" due to geopolitical tensions. She did not provide details on the latest dispute or the parties involved. Hong Kong serves as the headquarters for the IOMed, reflecting the city's role as an international legal and dispute resolution hub. The organization aims to provide a neutral platform for resolving cross-border conflicts, especially in Asia. Mediation is often seen as a faster and cheaper alternative to court battles. The IOMed's expansion indicates growing interest in alternative dispute resolution methods.
