Former Japanese Minister Criticizes India Over Bullet Train Delays
By TrendingWire Newsroom
A former Japanese minister has voiced frustration over repeated delays in India's ambitious bullet train project. Hideki Makihara, who previously served as Japan's deputy minister for foreign affairs, accused Indian authorities of failing to honor commitments. "They just don't keep promises, no matter what. Even if they make a promise, they flip it right away," he said in a recent interview. Makihara's comments highlight growing tensions between the two countries over the stalled high-speed rail link, which was first announced in 2015. The project, intended to connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad using Japan's Shinkansen technology, was initially expected to be completed by 2023. However, land acquisition disputes and other bureaucratic hurdles have pushed the timeline back significantly. Japan has provided financial and technical support, including a soft loan covering most of the project cost. The Indian government has cited challenges such as acquiring land in Maharashtra and Gujarat, as well as coordinating with multiple state agencies. Officials in New Delhi have not yet responded to Makihara's remarks. The bullet train is seen as a flagship example of India-Japan cooperation, but delays have strained diplomatic relations. Analysts say the project's completion could boost regional connectivity and economic growth. Meanwhile, both countries continue to discuss ways to accelerate progress.
