The head of the World Health Organization warned on Wednesday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading faster than efforts to contain it, with new cases doubling in some hotspots in the past week alone. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued the warning during a visit to the country, where he called for an urgent and massive scale-up of all response efforts.
According to France 24, families in Ituri province, the epicentre of the outbreak, said many frontline health workers have gone on strike over pay issues, worsening access to healthcare. The strike is adding to the difficulty of fighting an outbreak that is already accelerating.
Tedros's visit and warning highlight the mounting concern among health officials about the rapid spread of the virus. He stressed the need for a comprehensive and accelerated response to curb the epidemic, as the number of new infections rises sharply in affected areas.
