Italy Plans Urgent Pool Safety Law After Deadly Incident
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Italy's Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci announced on Tuesday that the government will fast-track a bill to improve swimming pool safety following a recent tragedy. Speaking to reporters, Musumeci stressed the need for stricter regulations and greater caution among pool owners and users. 'We will schedule the bill urgently. Strict rules and greater caution are needed,' he said. The minister did not provide specific details about the incident but referenced a latest tragedy that has sparked public concern. Drowning accidents in private and public pools have been a recurring issue in Italy, with dozens of deaths each year, particularly among children. The proposed legislation is expected to introduce mandatory safety measures such as barriers, alarms, and coverings, as well as stricter oversight of pool maintenance. Musumeci emphasized that prevention is key and that the government aims to reduce avoidable deaths. The bill is set to be debated in parliament soon, with cross-party support anticipated. Italy's civil protection department, which handles emergency response and risk prevention, will oversee the implementation of the new rules. Pool safety advocates have welcomed the announcement, urging swift action to save lives. The minister concluded by calling for collective responsibility: 'We must all be more vigilant and responsible when it comes to water safety.'
