US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States could reach a deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Wednesday, a move he said would allow hundreds of waiting ships to pass and help stabilize global energy prices.
In an interview with CNBC, Bessent said talks with Tehran were ongoing and that an agreement could be reached as soon as Wednesday to open the strait and move toward a more normalized position in the conflict. He said hundreds of ships were waiting to pass, though quite a few vessels had been coming out even in recent days. He expected energy prices to settle back down, which would be good for the entire world.
According to The New York Times, the deal would address President Trump's most urgent political problem by allowing ships to move again, but it would give Iran strategic leverage it did not have before the war.
