Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor’s dinosaur survival thriller “The End of Oak Street” is targeting a $25 million debut in North America this weekend, but it is expected to land behind “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which is heading into its third weekend on top, according to box office projections.
The film, written and directed by David Robert Mitchell and produced by J.J. Abrams, follows a suburban family terrorized by rampaging dinosaurs. Hathaway and McGregor play a married couple trying to save their relationship while battling the prehistoric creatures.
Early reviews are largely positive, with critics calling it a fun, knowingly trashy homage to 1980s Steven Spielberg blockbusters. Some have noted it is scarier than recent “Jurassic” sequels, while others describe it as high-end junk with a blockbuster rush.
The movie is one of five new nationwide releases this weekend, but none are expected to unseat Sony and Marvel’s comic-book juggernaut. Hathaway has five films opening between May and October this year, with “The End of Oak Street” widely seen as her least awards-friendly project.
