Nepali-born mountaineer Nirmal 'Nims' Purja has been confirmed dead after an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, according to his company. Purja, known for scaling the world's 14 highest peaks in just over six months in 2019, had written before the climb that he asked for nothing but safe passage up and back down, and that he took no mountains for granted. Broad Peak, at 8,051 meters, is the 12th highest mountain in the world. The company's confirmation did not provide further details about the accident. Purja's 2019 feat, which he completed with the assistance of supplementary oxygen, earned him international recognition and a documentary series. He was widely admired for his speed and endurance in high-altitude climbing.
