Russia fines one critic, jails another in crackdown on dissent
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Russian authorities have intensified their crackdown on opposition voices, fining one anti-war critic and detaining another. Boris Nadezhdin, a former lawmaker and outspoken critic of the war in Ukraine, was fined and barred from running for parliament, according to reports. Separately, blogger Ilya Remeslo, known for his anti-war commentary, has been remanded in custody. The moves are part of a broader government effort to suppress dissent amid the ongoing conflict. Since the start of the war in February 2022, Russia has passed laws criminalizing criticism of the military, leading to thousands of prosecutions. Critics accuse the Kremlin of silencing opposition to maintain public support for the war. Nadezhdin had previously attempted to register as a candidate for the presidential election but was rejected. The exact charges against him and Remeslo were not immediately clear. Human rights groups have condemned the actions, calling them a violation of free speech. The Russian government maintains that such measures are necessary to protect national security and prevent the spread of false information.
