The Supreme Court has agreed to examine a public interest litigation seeking an alternative to Jantar Mantar as the designated protest venue in Delhi. The court asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to take instructions and respond to the plea seeking alternative arrangements for agitations. During the hearing, the Chief Justice of India noted that the petition raised concerns relating to access and movement in the area.
In a separate matter, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the Tamil Nadu government's plea in the Thirupparankundram row, but granted no interim relief. The bench questioned whether there was a prevailing tradition of lighting a lamp on the stone pillar, to which the state responded that no historical records supported such a practice.
