The Los Angeles Lakers are being bought by former Disney chief executive Bob Iger and businessman Josh Kushner for more than $12 billion, a record price for an NBA franchise. Sources told ESPN and The New York Times that the deal values the team at over $12 billion, while CBS Sports reports the price as $12.5 billion.
The sale comes just 14 months after Mark Walter purchased the Lakers, and The Hollywood Reporter described the deal as a surprise that raises questions about Walter's business empire.
Iger, who formerly led Disney, and Kushner, founder of investment firm Thrive Capital, said they are lifelong NBA fans who are honored to become stewards of the team. The Lakers, featuring star player Luka Dončić, are aiming to return to title contention under their new ownership.
