Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised on Day 21 of Hunger Strike Following Removal from Protest Site
By TrendingWire Newsroom
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken to a hospital on Saturday, the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. Police removed him from the protest site amid chaos, drawing accusations from a political group that officers used force against student demonstrators. The Delhi Police also detained Abhijeet Dipke, a member of the group, according to reports.
Wangchuk had been fasting for over 20 days to press for demands related to Ladakh's statehood and environmental protection. In a video message on Friday, the 20th day of his fast, he appealed for public support ahead of a planned march on Parliament. He described his physical condition, saying his body was weakening but stressed that the protest would continue.
The protest site saw scuffles as authorities moved in to end the hunger strike. The group accused police of using batons against students, though details of the incident remain unclear. Investigations are ongoing.
Wangchuk's condition is being monitored at the hospital. The protest movement has drawn attention to issues in the Ladakh region.
