Elderly Voters Above 85 Face Extra Scrutiny, Officials Deny

By TrendingWire Newsroom

Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in some areas have reported that they have been instructed to place voters aged 85 and above under a special category called 'probable absent, shifted, dead/deleted or duplicate' (ASDD). This would mean these elderly voters could face additional checks before being allowed to vote. The claims have been denied by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), who said there is no such instruction. BLOs, who are responsible for updating voter lists and assisting with elections, said the directive came from higher authorities. They expressed concern that this could disenfranchise elderly citizens who are already facing mobility issues. Under the ASDD category, names are marked for verification, and if not cleared, voters may be removed from the rolls. However, the CEO clarified that no such order has been issued. He stated that all voters, regardless of age, are treated equally and that the electoral process ensures everyone can vote without discrimination. He added that any confusion might stem from routine verification processes that apply to all voters. The matter has raised debates about ensuring ease of voting for senior citizens. Election officials have urged BLOs to follow standard procedures and not create unnecessary barriers. The Election Commission has not commented on the issue yet.
