The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has directed Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu, amounting to a total of 4 TMC. The order comes as Tamil Nadu's kuruvai paddy coverage in the Cauvery delta has fallen sharply due to water shortage. As of July 27, coverage was 3.87 lakh acres, down from 5.05 lakh acres on the same date last year—a drop of over one lakh acres. Karnataka had appealed the CWMA's earlier order, citing low reservoir levels and drought conditions. Officials noted that reservoir levels were significantly lower than last year. Tamil Nadu representatives opposed the appeal, arguing that sufficient flow exists. The authority's decision aims to address the acute water shortage affecting the kuruvai crop in the delta region.
