The Supreme Court has agreed to hear early a plea by the Tamil Nadu government seeking Karnataka's compliance with the Cauvery Water Tribunal's orders. The case is scheduled for August 13, according to a report. The DMK's application seeking similar directions against Karnataka is also likely to be heard the same day.
Tamil Nadu told the court that Karnataka had continued to defy the tribunal's orders for water allocation, except on a few occasions when floods created inevitable surpluses in reservoirs. The state's plea urges the court to direct Karnataka to release water as per the tribunal's award.
The early hearing comes amid an ongoing dispute between the two states over sharing of Cauvery river water. The tribunal had allocated a specific share to Tamil Nadu, but Karnataka has repeatedly failed to comply, Tamil Nadu alleges.
