Monsoon floods in Assam have killed at least 78 people, with thousands more displaced, officials said on Tuesday. Opposition lawmakers staged a protest in the Indian parliament over the government's response to the crisis. The worst-hit area is the village of Hiloni Nepali Khuti in Sivasagar district, which was completely destroyed within an hour. Torrential rain in neighboring Nagaland caused the Dikhow River to overflow its banks, sweeping away homes and nearly 4,000 cattle. Many families who relied on dairy farming have lost their livelihoods and are struggling to rebuild with little hope remaining.
Rescuers continue to evacuate stranded residents, but floodwaters have submerged large areas, hampering relief efforts. Authorities have set up relief camps for the displaced, but conditions remain dire. The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are recovered from affected regions.
