Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels attacked Saudi Aramco's Jazan refinery and the Red Sea port of Mokha, the group said on Sunday, two days after Saudi Arabia signed a defense pact with Turkey and Pakistan.
Mokha is one of the main ports controlled by Yemen's internationally recognized government. It was recently renovated to handle shipping that avoids Houthi-held ports in Hodeida.
The defense pact, signed with two Sunni Muslim US allies, is designed to strengthen collective deterrence against aggression. It states that an armed attack on any of the three countries would be considered an attack on all. The agreement comes as regional instability grows from the US-Israeli war on Iran.
The Houthis have stepped up attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict, with the latest assault marking an escalation in the region.
