Israeli Republican Figure Calls for US to Rethink Falklands Stance After Argentina's World Cup Win

By TrendingWire Newsroom

An Israeli-American Republican leader has urged the United States to reconsider its position on the Falkland Islands after Argentina's World Cup victory over England. Marc Zell, chairman of Republicans Overseas Israel, pointed to Argentina's players displaying a banner reading 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas' after their semi-final win. Zell argued that Argentina has been a loyal ally to the US and Israel, while Britain refused to join the US-Israeli war on Iran, which he called a betrayal. He suggested using the Falklands as leverage to punish Britain. Argentina's President Javier Milei, a strong supporter of Israel, backed Zell's comments. Milei said Argentina is getting closer to recovering the islands through diplomacy. The banner has sparked controversy, with FIFA reviewing the incident under rules against political messages at matches. Britain responded, saying the Falkland Islands are definitely theirs. The islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, have been disputed since 1833. Argentina invaded in 1982, leading to a 74-day war. In a 2013 referendum, 99.8% of Falklands voters chose to remain a British territory.
