Global environmental progress stalls, European nations top rankings

By TrendingWire Newsroom

A new report on global environmental performance shows that European countries continue to lead the world, but overall progress has slowed. The 2026 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), released by researchers from Yale and Columbia universities, ranks countries on their environmental health and ecosystem vitality. The index is published every two years. According to the findings, many nations are not on track to meet the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Progress in controlling pollution and managing natural resources has also slowed compared to previous years. The EPI evaluates 180 countries using indicators such as air and water quality, biodiversity, and climate change mitigation. Top performers include several European nations that have strong environmental policies and investments in clean energy. However, the report warns that even leading countries face challenges in reducing emissions fast enough. The researchers emphasize that urgent action is needed globally to address climate change and environmental degradation. The index aims to provide data for policymakers and the public to track environmental progress and identify areas needing improvement. This year's results highlight both achievements and the long road ahead for sustainability.
