Georgia Tech Student Creates Tool to Improve Chemical Spill Response

By TrendingWire Newsroom

A Georgia Tech student has helped develop a new tool that could make workplaces safer during chemical spills. Diya Godavarti, a second-year chemical and biomolecular engineering student, worked on the project as part of a course on chemical equity. The class focused on reducing chemical exposure in vulnerable communities. The tool helps workers quickly assess risks from chemical spills or open containers, allowing them to respond more effectively. It was created through Georgia Tech's Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program, which places students in long-term, cross-disciplinary research teams. Godavarti joined the team in a single semester and contributed to building a model that predicts how chemicals spread and how best to contain them. Such tools are important because chemical accidents can happen in laboratories, factories, and other workplaces. Quick and accurate responses can prevent injuries and environmental damage. The project shows how classroom learning can solve real-world problems. The team plans to continue refining the model so it can be used more widely. While still in development, the tool has the potential to improve safety standards and protect workers in industries that handle hazardous materials.
