At least 181 people were killed when a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Aug. 10, according to The Rio Times, while NDTV reports 47 dead and calls the situation critical. The quake hit near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region at 7:34 a.m. local time. The Rio Times lists its depth at about 95 kilometers, while the U.S. Geological Survey, cited by NDTV, measured it at 107 kilometers. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Ecuador. Colombia has declared a national disaster. The hardest-hit cities include Cali with 95 deaths, Pereira with 72, and Quibdó with 9, The Rio Times reports. The same report says about 1,310 people were injured and more than 2,500 are missing. Hundreds of rescue workers have been deployed to free victims trapped under rubble, and hundreds of people remain missing. The numbers are expected to rise.
