Israel Reclassifies Crocodiles for Potential Use in Prison Security

By TrendingWire Newsroom

Israel has changed the legal status of crocodiles, opening the door for their use in prison security to prevent escapes. Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman reclassified crocodiles from "wild animals" to "captive-bred wildlife," a move that allows the reptiles to be used for security purposes. The decision follows a proposal by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to surround a prison housing Palestinian detainees with crocodiles, inspired by Florida's "Alligator Alcatraz" facility, which uses alligators to deter immigration detainees from escaping. Ben Gvir welcomed the reclassification, calling it a step toward enhancing security. The change has drawn criticism from animal rights groups, who argue that using crocodiles for deterrence is inhumane and poses risks to both inmates and guards. Supporters, however, say it could be an effective non-lethal measure. The reclassification also simplifies regulations for breeding and keeping crocodiles in captivity. No concrete plans for deploying crocodiles at prisons have been announced yet, but the ministry is reportedly exploring options. The move highlights Israel's ongoing debate over security measures in its detention facilities.
