An earthquake struck near Egypt's Suez early on Monday, shaking residents in Cairo and along the border with Gaza, with no immediate reports of injuries.
The quake hit at 3 a.m. local time. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured its magnitude at 5.6 and placed the epicenter 38 kilometers (about 24 miles) north of Suez. The US Geological Survey, however, put the magnitude at 5.0 and said the epicenter was about 22 miles (35 kilometers) north of the city. Other reports cited the tremor as magnitude 5.5.
Tremors were felt in the Egyptian capital, waking residents, and in areas near Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip. In response, the Egyptian Red Crescent activated its emergency response plan in the governorates where the quake was felt.
Authorities have not reported any damage or casualties so far.
