Boeing and Airbus Plan Next-Generation Jets, but Airlines Stay Cautious

By TrendingWire Newsroom

Boeing and Airbus are both working on designs for their next single-aisle passenger jets, which are the workhorses of the airline industry. However, airlines and investors are not pushing for these new planes yet. Instead, they are more concerned with current production rates and delivery schedules for existing models. The two aerospace giants are the only major manufacturers of large commercial aircraft. Their narrow-body jets, like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, are used for short to medium-haul flights and make up the bulk of global airline fleets. Both companies have been developing concepts for successors to these popular planes, aiming to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. But airlines are not demanding a new aircraft right now. Many are still dealing with delays in deliveries of current models and focusing on recovering from the pandemic's impact on travel. Investors also want to see stable production before committing to new programs. As a result, the race for the next narrow-body jet is happening behind the scenes, without public pressure from customers. Industry experts say that introducing a new aircraft type takes years of research and billions of dollars in investment. Both Boeing and Airbus are likely to wait until the market is ready before launching their new projects. For now, the priority remains getting existing planes out the door.
