Israeli Minister Says US-Iran War Benefits Israel, Vows No Involvement

Israel's far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, said Tuesday that the ongoing US military campaign against Iran serves Israel's interests, as long as Israel does not participate directly. Speaking at a conference in Israel, Smotrich stated that the current situation is 'best for us' and that Israel has no interest in joining the fighting. He emphasized that Israel's ultimate goal is to weaken and eventually overthrow Iran's regime, and that targeting Iran's economy is the most effective way to achieve that. Smotrich noted Iran's high inflation and currency devaluation as signs of vulnerability. The US and Iran resumed hostilities earlier this month after a brief ceasefire attempt in June failed. Israel had opposed that ceasefire and lobbied for continued military action. According to reports, 17 US military personnel have been killed and over 420 wounded in the conflict, with costs to US taxpayers exceeding $100 billion. Israeli officials have denied trying to escalate the war for their own benefit, but Smotrich's comments suggest a clear preference for the US to bear the burden. Smotrich, known for his hawkish views on Palestinians and Iran, has previously called for Israeli settlements in Gaza. The US has not commented on his remarks. The war continues with no ceasefire in sight.
