Armed police officers will patrol the UK’s largest Pride festival this weekend following an attack on an LGBT+ event in Berlin that killed one person and injured at least 29 others. Police announced the deployment, citing safety concerns after the attack on Sunday, in which a suspect drove a van into a crowd and then stabbed people. The suspect, named as Abdul B and reported to have links to Islamic State, was shot dead by police after a nearly 24-hour manhunt. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the attack as “absolutely horrific.” The Pride event, expected to draw hundreds of thousands of attendees, will see armed officers in place to ensure public safety. Organizers have expressed support for the measure, emphasizing that the event remains a celebration of diversity and inclusion. The police stressed that the decision was a precautionary response to the specific threat faced by LGBT+ communities globally, and that there is no known direct threat to the UK event.
